Perfection is the goal, not the expectation

1 Jun

I recently completed a huge project at work.  The president of the company came by to ask me how things were a couple of weeks after the  rollout.  After I briefed him on how great the rollout was, barring some minor flaws, I said to him, “It wasn’t perfect, but I wasn’t expecting perfection.”  He looked at me quizzically and said “You weren’t?” as if I should have.  I said, “No.  Were you?”

Here is the thing.  In my philosophy, perfection should always be the goal, but it should never be expected.  As hard as you may strive for it, nothing you ever do will be perfect.  Instead of obsessing about the imperfections, I’m learning to take joy and pride in the whole.

Perfection should be the goal, but should never be expected.
